A Wedding Overlooking the Water – Part IV

We conclude our beach week series with a trip up the Northern Coast. Thank you to San Francisco wedding photographer Kevin Chin Photography, for these beautiful NorCal wedding photos!

You’ve chosen your destination, now the fun can begin! Thoughts of the decor, the color palette and of course, your dress run rampant, but planning any event requires great attention to detail. Hiring a wedding coordinator can alleviate much of the stress associated with the process. The job of a wedding planner is to bring your vision to life. Contemplate locating a consultant with beach wedding experience. They will be able to equip you with insider’s tips to creating a stylish, stress-free event.

Since the beach is an informal setting you are not constricted by expectations often attached to a traditional wedding setting and may fashion an affair suited to your unique personality. An intimate ceremony can be attained by having your loved ones encircle you while exchanging your vows, or spread pristine white beach beach towels on the sand for a laid back feel. A more formal environment can be established by constructing a chuppah (a traditional Jewish wedding canopy) and adding chairs to the site, if permitted. Remember that the sparkling water of the Pacific Ocean is the most spectacular backdrop for your wedding. Subtly incorporate elements of the natural environment for a stunning event.

The northern coast of California has a vast, somewhat empty shoreline brimming with wildlife and peppered with majestic redwoods. This region of California does have a bit more fog and a longer rainy season. Keep this in mind when choosing a time of year to wed in this lovely part of the state.

Santa Cruz has an abundance of beaches for any imaginable seaside activity. Hawaiian royalty first introduced the sport of surfing to the United States in the city of Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz County website has detailed information in assisting a couple who has chosen this county as a wedding destination.

Can you imagine a trip up the coast without a visit to San Francisco Bay? Many couples choose a location that features the stunning and truly iconic Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge is merely one aspect of this national recreation area that extends from San Francisco County and San Mateo, south of the bridge to Marin County, north of the bridge. A plethora of information can be found on the National Parks website for acquiring permits and finding the perfect location.

Moving north to Point Reyes National Seashore are some gorgeous views of the ocean from this national park. Weddings are allowed in some places. A call to the Special Use Coordinator will get the process started.

The spectacular scenery of Mendocino affords advantages for the couple who desire a seaside escape. From personal experience, there is nothing more romantic than a ceremony with views of a lighthouse. Point Arena Lighthouse is a lovely place to wed. This site offers several locations such as the tower and a gazebo to conduct a wedding. The Botanical Gardens of the Mendocino Coast is a glorious convergence of land and sea. The Botanical Gardens offer several picturesque outdor settings including a ceremony on the bluff.

The terrain becomes rugged and very natural in the northernmost territory of California. In Del Norte County, the “redwoods meet the sea.” Battery Point Island has its own lighthouse that has been the scene of many memorable wedding events. Remember when looking at an area that is sparcely populated that you may have an abundance of natural beauty but may lack some of the amenities that a more urban atmosphere can afford.

Whatever destination you choose remind yourself that this is your special day. Create an event for you and your spouse that will remain in your memory for a lifetime!

Beach Week 2: Short and Oh, So Sweet

A beach scene is the ideal place to show off your toned and tanned legs. Amsale’s Ally gown is a playful alternative for a sandy setting.

A Wedding Overlooking the Water – Part III

The gorgeous wedding photos showcased today are courtesy of A. Blake Photography, taken at The Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach.

Consider all of the logistics that go into a beach wedding. Will you be having just the ceremony on the beach, or will you be conducting the reception there as well? If your chosen location is a bit off the beaten path, remember that you will need to get all of the equipment associated with your ceremony there. Make sure the rental companies and caterers are able to accommodate your specific needs before you sign the contracts. Small details can become big issues if you do not deal with them ahead of time. Are restrooms available to you and your guests? You may want to post signs leading your guests to the location if the destination is out of the way, or even hire transportation for family and friends. As mentioned in Part II, the weather can be a factor. The dress code is directly impacted by your choice. Short and sweet, long and flowy, sunscreen or sweaters…be prepared and prepare your guests when sending out the Save the Dates or invitations.

The Central Coast Region of California is an area rich in agriculture and history for the park system in California. North of gorgeous Santa Barbara is an area rife with natural beauty and wildlife. The San Luis Obispo Coast Park System supplies plentiful beach areas in which to wed. I must issue a caveat to anyone considering a beachside ceremony on the Central Coast. Due to budgetary constraints in California, there has been talk of closing over 100 state parks after Labor Day. Rumor has it that rural, coastal state parks will be closed before any urban parks are shut down. Much of the Central Coast could be affected by closures. To ensure the acquisition of a site, remember to call ahead.

Pismo Beach is a “pearl” of a place to marry by the sea. Its long white beaches have long attracted many to its sandy shores. No permits are required if you are marrying along the beach within Pismo Beach city limits. However, you could be playing “Russian roulette” with your wedding if the beaches are overcrowded or other couples have chosen the same day and time as you to wed. There are parks with scenic views of the ocean which do require permits through the city and will guarantee your day as reserved.  Dinosaur Caves Park has a bluff top location with spectacular ocean views, while Margo Dodd Park has the added benefit of a quaint gazebo in which couples may wed.

Some beach parks fall under the jurisdiction of the Port San Luis Harbor District. A couple may marry on any of three beaches within its supervision with the proper license: Avila Beach Park, Olde Port Beach or Fisherman’s Beach.

The San Luis Coast District falls under the direction of the California State Parks system. There are many parks within this area in which weddings may occur. There are specific rules to be followed and permits must also be obtained. Two popular and beautiful coastal parks in this region are Montaña de Oro State Park and Morro Bay State Park. Most parks allow only ceremonies without permitting receptions to be conducted.

Cayucos Beach and Shamel Park are under the authority of San Luis Obispo County. Shamel Park found in Cambria has access to the sandy shore. Weddings on Cayucos Beach may take place just north or south of the pier.

Our last stop on the Central Coast is the Monterey Peninsula. It draws couples with its natural beauty but keeps them with its diverse menu of cultural experiences, vibrant arts community and thriving dining scene and nightlife. Lover’s Point Beach and Park are the epitome of romance when thinking of tying the knot. A ceremony on the beach is based on first come, first served. However, couples must have permits to marry at Lover’s Point Park. Berwick Park grants guests magnificent views not only of the ocean but of majestice cypress trees as well. Along Carmel Bay is the mile-long Carmel River State Beach. This beach is part of an estuary and abounds with song birds and water fowl. A special event coordinator is available to answer questions through their website. Carmel Beach is sandwiched between the glorious Pacific Ocean and soaring bluffs punctuated with regal cypresses. As always permits and regulations must be deferred to for a wedding to manifest. The last and maybe most recognizable area on the peninsula is Pebble Beach. Pebble Beach is located within scenic 17-mile Drive. Although no permits are issued, it is based on a first come, first served basis and a gate fee must be paid. It is an amazing beach but could be a risk unless you plan very carefully!

Northern California is the last stop on this intriguing tour of beach locales for your perfect day!

A Wedding Overlooking the Water – Part II

All of these amazing photos of Orange County Weddings overlooking the water are by Jim Kennedy Photographers.

Timing can make all the difference in the world for a beach wedding. The mad summer rush of vacationers can make for a less than private affair. If you are inclined to wed in the summer be prepared for gawkers and potential crashers. Keep in mind some beaches may not allow weddings during the summer months. Late spring and early fall tend to have less people populating the beach. During the late spring a phenomena occurs on the coast of California. ‘May Gray’ and ‘June Gloom’ cover the coastal areas with a thick, hazy fog. It generally burns off later in the day, but can sometimes linger. Knowing the weather patterns can help in choosing the perfect time of year for your event. You may also want to consider a back up plan in case of rain. Having a tent can add to the overall ambiance and protect you and your guests from the elements. Also, remember to consult a tide chart when choosing a time of day for your ceremony. The size of the beach varies greatly from low to high tide.

The rest of Southern California is calling out. Here are some suggestions for beach weddings from Orange County to Santa Barbara.

Orange County is revered as the ‘California Riviera.’ Miles of immaculate, sun drenched shores and awe-inspiring sunsets have drawn thousands to be betrothed on the beaches of Orange County. San Clemente State Beach can be found at the southern tip of Orange County. The beach reaches for a mile before meeting up with the foot of the bluffs. Dana Point Beaches feature some of the most exclusive areas on Orange County’s gold coast. Two beautiful beaches in this area are Salt Creek Beach and Doheny State Beach. Fashionable Monarch Beach is the home to utterly inspiring resorts such as The St. Regis and The Ritz-Carlton. Laguna Beach offers some beautiful beach options such as the Main Beach, the ‘Window to the Sea’, and Heisler Beach. Heisler Beach is known for its tide pools and glorious sunset views. Crystal Cove State Beach Park also allows couples to take the step to wedded bliss. Laguna Beach’s well-appointed Surf and Sand Resort offers the option of a ceremony on the beach. Newport Beach is renowned for its beauty and vast coastline. Newport Beach includes Corona del Mar State Beach which meets up with the hugely popular Newport Harbor. Peninsula Park and Inspiration/Lookout Point Park also permit weddings in the city of Newport Beach. Huntington Beach is known as ‘Surf City’ to many Californians. It is over 8 miles of uninterrupted beachfront happiness.  From the Huntington Beach pier one can enjoy views of Catalina Island, Newport Beach Pier and Long Beach in the distance. Permits for parks in Orange County can be found here.

Leaving Orange County, we venture to Long Beach, one of California’s largest cities. The city boasts many beaches and park areas. “Twenty-six miles across the sea, Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me, Santa Catalina, the island of romance…” A high speed ferry leaving from Long Beach can whisk you across the ocean to the oasis of Catalina Island. Before hitting Malibu, though, is the ever scenic Santa Monica. Santa Monica is one of LA’s most popular beachside destinations. Malibu is a world unto itself. A sanctuary for the rich and famous, Malibu’s beaches and views are unparalleled. The Adamson House is a national historic site located on Malibu Lagoon State Beach which oozes Malibu architecture and charm. Beach permits for Los Angeles County can be viewed online. Situated between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara are Oxnard and Ventura which provide vistas to satisfy the needs of the couple who hear the call of the sea.

While Orange County is known as the California Riviera, Santa Barbara has been dubbed America’s Riviera. Santa Barbara is nestled between the sparkling shores of the Pacific Ocean and the majesty of the Santa Ynez Mountains. There are many beach locations to meet the needs of a discerning couple. Shoreline Park sits on the bluff and looks over the ocean for the ideal setting.  Santa Barbara’s Leadbetter Beach is another fine choice for amazing ocean vistas.

Next week, we will travel up the shore to California’s scenic Central Coast which grants a couple incomparable views from which to say “I Do!”

Beach Week: Ebb and Flowy

The fragrantly fresh ocean breeze will transcend this already flowing masterpiece from Vera Wang (style #112010) when walking down the sandy aisle of your beach wedding.

Beach Weddings: Happy Chuppah

A Happy Chuppah makes for a blissful bride. Frame your celebration with a canopy designed to your discriminating tastes.

Beach Week: Sweet Suite in the Sand

Reminiscent of the cool azure hue of the Pacific this suite from Lauren K complements a ceremony on Cali’s sandy shores.

A Wedding Overlooking the Water – Part I

These weddings were photographed by Bauman Photographers at four different San Diego area beach locations!

From the southern sandy shores to the majestic redwood forests of the North, California’s coastline is the ideal locale for a romantic wedding overlooking the water. The diversity of our gorgeous shoreline provides glorious vistas suited for the eclectic styles and tastes of Californian couples. While it is easy to get swept up in the romance of a beach wedding, keep in mind a little preparation and knowledge will make the process a pleasurable one.

Whether you want your toes tickled by the sand, or you desire a majestic view of the ocean atop a weather beaten bluff, there are rules that one must abide by in order to carry out the perfect nuptials. Each beach or park is governed by one of three entities: city, county or state. Rules vary by jurisdiction. There are often limits to the number of guests allowed to gather or whether food and beverages may be served. Policies also vary regarding structures and sound amplification. Of course, the acquisition of permits and fees to be rendered differ at each spot. Once you have chosen your destination, contact the proper agency to set your date and purchase the permits.

Let’s take a journey of discovery to find your own slice of heaven on the California shore. The most simple way of viewing California’s coast is to divide it into three parts: Southern California, the Central Coast and Northern California. SoCal beaches are often representative of the images couples have in mind when considering a beach wedding. There are also abundant beachfront areas to be found in Southern California, so the odyssey starts here!

Coronado is an excellent place to look for a beautiful beachside ceremony. While it is often referred to as Coronado Island this exquisite haven is actually a peninsula. Top beaches on Coronado include Coronado Beach, Glorietta Bay Beach and Silver Strand State Beach. The iconic Hotel Del Coronado is located on Coronado Central Beach and is a must see.

Many options are available for weddings within the city of San Diego. Permits are now issued a year in advance for some areas and opening day for permits is the first working Monday of each month. Calumet is a popular spot which overlooks the surfing spot The Rock Pile. Shelter Island Shoreline Park spans the bayside length of Shelter Island. This area has views of the bay and San Diego’s cityscape. This park is one of many that falls under the auspices of the Port of San Diego. Their website provides a listing of parks available for weddings and links to permits and a planning guide

Seagrove Park in Del Mar sits on the edge of a bluff overlooking the beach. The verdant grassy areas are dotted with pine trees and benches along the wooden pathway. This area attracts many couples who dream of wedding near the water.

La Jolla is indeed the Jewel by the Sea. This cozy community if rife with scenic beaches and seascape. While the coastline is rather rugged Ellen Browning Scripps Park is an idyllic setting for a dreamy ceremony. La Jolla Cove is one of California’s most photographed locations, a perfect choice for a wedding. La Jolla Shores is a sandy mile long stretch of beach adjacent to residential areas. Cuvier Park is referred to as The Wedding Bowl and is located across the street from the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. Any spot in La Jolla will undoubtedly be breathtaking.

North County San Diego offers a plethora of sloping sand beaches to go with that amazing amber sunset. One of North County’s more popular places is Encinitas.  Encinitas is a surfers’ paradise and an excellent choice for a relaxed wedding atmosphere. Weddings are allowed at Moonlight Beach Overlook and J Street Viewpoint.

Later this week, we will venture to Orange County, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara and on up to Northern California, while learning more about creating the ultimate beach wedding experience.
